How to extract data from dead Dell laptop

I am a totally computer laywoman. How do I extract data from my dead Dell laptop? B/C I have financial information on the hard drive, I am not willing to sent it to be repaired. I determined to do it by myself and educated myself by googling the answer, find the following interesting. http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/questions/101-343693.

Can anyone direct me exactly what product to use and where to buy it? The easiest way please!

Note: I only have a Macbook now. Will the method works on Mac?
