help, laptop keeps locking up

Hi GGJJDDMM,
My Sony VAIO (AMD Athlon,XP home, ATI rage mobility display adapter) freeze up on me several times today and drives me crazy. I have to cycle the battery to reboot it. The error log says,

Friday, February 20, 2004 Service Control Manager The Ati HotKey Poller service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

What's the problem? I did not run any video-heavy sw (like games) on it.
