You have said something right but windows embedded is different. When you install windows embedded to your computer.It will only intall anything that hardware needed. If you add new hardware after OS installed. It might not work. But if you install full OS, it will work with new hardware added later. I have installed windows xp standard embedded and windows standard which is windows 7 to a single board computer. I can reduce the size to less than 2G for having windows xp installed. Basically, you can use windows standard embedded for any PC. There is a lot of information out there that you can check how windows standard embedded works.
