looking for recommendations for laptops

Thinking of upgrading. Looking for recommendations for two types of laptops: 1) used for heavy software development, 2) low-end multi-media laptop for web browsing, email, reading documents, watching movies on connected LCD TV. I am more concerned with performance, cost, and quality with little attention to brand or look.

Current laptop is Thinkpad T61 running XP, which become rather slow even after reformating HD and re-installing. The nice thing with Thinkpad is that it is quite easy to change hard drives, and one can select to boot from either the main HD or the second HD in HD adapter in DVD slot.
