system shutdown due to T61 overheat (XP SP3)

Reformated T61, had experienced system shutdown several times, probably due to CPU overheat. Any fixes? The system becomes rather slow after reformating. Saw someone had a similar slow response issue a while ago, but was not able to find the original post. Thanks for your inputs.
