I think you are partly correct

There is no "package" surrounding the silicon die anymore. It is directly soldered on to a small board. You will see a bare piece of silicon pasted onto the board. That board is the chip they sold that goes into a "socket".

Yes, it might be correctly stated as "cpu socket type". :)
