Question: Word documents Composed with Macbook

My friend is a Mac user. She uses Microsoft word to write but each time when she sends me her writing as email attachment, it will show unknown format with a question mark. I cannot open it directly with Microsoft word 2003 and have to save it and then open it with King Soft.

The quesiton is since she saves her document as word (.doc), why do PCs read it as unknown format? (three PCs with word 2003 or 2007)?
