A couple of possibilities:
1. Bad power supply. I've seen plenty of machines having this behavior when the power supply is bad.
2. Your mainboard is bad.
Don't think it has anything to do with overheating. Try a new power supply first, it will only cost $10 buying online. Also, if possible, go to BIOS after booting up as quickly as you can, and see if you can find any info there.
