Try: remove the old 512M, plug the new 1G in its slot.

Does it work? If it doesn't work, the new RAM doesn't work in your PC. If it works, then plus the old 512M in the empty slot. Does it work? If not, remove the 512M, keep the 1G.

I found the order of RAM matters in some motherboard.
