Maybe the CD player is just too old

before 2003 or 2002 when CD-R was not that popular, some player has weak Laser signal that is hard to play CD-R. It could also be your CD media having weak reflection.

New players tends to fix the weak signal problem ... but pumping in more current to the laser diode. It will shorten the life span of the diode from 20 years to 10 years. :)
