yes for the stealing, just turn that off. I am afraid wire only router is rare now since it is so ... 20th century technology. Gigabit router is only $15 or so. sigh.

Router will have internal firewall, it is actually more secure than direct connect to modem. Even you have only one machine, it is better to have a router in between the modem and your PC.
