Job market-wise, Oracle seems to be better than SQL Server.
If you have solid C/C++, Oracle and Linux skills, you should land a job without much problem.
As you said, it's hard to get a DBA job without being a DBA already. What you can do is get a database developer job, acquire DBA skills and then look for DBA jobs.
