Now database is everywhere. It's hard to find a project which does not use database.
Try to get in-depth knowledge in SQL and database administration, by learning how to use and how to manage a database. You can download Oracle database server from their Website. Use the Linux version so you'll get Linux skills along the way.
Job market-wise, Oracle seems to be better than SQL Server.
If you have solid C/C++, Oracle and Linux skills, you should land a job without much problem.
As you said, it's hard to get a DBA job without being a DBA already. What you can do is get a database developer job, acquire DBA skills and then look for DBA jobs.
