Haven been working on so called "4G" WiMax for past three yrs on product development, trial and market deployment, testing and benchmarking for past 3 yrs. (currently still heavily involved in it), unfortunately have to agree with "Wooddiy"'s post.
WiMax is not in good shape at all. There are a lot of issues with this technologies and many others.
First SprintPCS is never a technology leader on carrier side. Whatever they picked always failed in long run. ClearWire is even worse than Sprint. The only valuable asset both companies have are the spectrum. Currently ClearWire lunched many markets across USA. However in terms of performance, SUCKS!
I validated Las Vegas, Portland, OR, Atlanta and DFW. So many issues with their datafill so handover is always a problem. Microwave backhaul is so unreliable. Coverage is spotty especially with poor network design, the 2.5GHz make things worse, CORE networks is a myth, they don't have enough expertise nor equipment to do troubleshooting, and on and on.
Currently most reliable 3G data services are evDO Rev A or HSPA. Thoguh speed is not as good as WiMAX. However in terms of continueous and reliable services (which Wimax netwotk lacking now), 3G data still works better.
As for next generation, LTE may be the only way to go.
