Two nice things about 7:
1) Even your DVD disc is for upgrading only, it'll still ask you if you prefer to do a fresh install than upgrading. See, even MS finally agrees with me that upgrading sucks. Also, fresh install takes much less time than upgrading.
2) when you do a fresh install, it'll save old directories into "windows.old", so you can find all your old data there. Still, you should back up your data before the install, just in case.
Although you need to re-install all your programs, it is well worth it.
