買個外置硬盤的問題．

I am going to buy aｎ external hardrive to store my files, but I have some questions!;
1) Should I create several partions for it? In case something happen, I will not lose all my files?

2) If partition only can be created when the disc just formated and is empty?

3) If my PC will be slow if I connect a big external hardrive such as
1.0 TB?
