I did that for my phone.
go to pageplus web site, click 'online shopping' then 'activation', select '
I want to activate a phone and port my current phone number', it will ask you the phone number that you want to port. It will ask you the account number (most likely your phone number) and pin. But ATT's account number is different from phone number, You can call Att to get your account number.
Enter your ESN of your phone.
There is no charge at all. After few hours, you can try #22890 to program your phone. If it is not ready, call Pageplus customer support for status.

After porting, your account will have 6$ credit.

During porting, when your previous provider removes your phone number from the system and before you activate your number in pageplus, you will not have wireless service. But there is only couple of hours' gap or even less.
