ARM -> StrongARM (DEC) -> XScale (Intel) -> EOL (Marvell)

When ARM was a startup, an asic group in DEC bought the exclusive right to ARM architectue. They modified/improved the architecture into StrongARM. DEC was then defunct and sold to Compaq. Pieces of DEC were sold off at fire sale. Intel picked up StrongARM and turned it into XScale. After pouring billions of $ into R&D with very limited success, Intel decided to exit mobile computing and sold the product line to Marvell. As always, Intel failed to foresee the success of RIM/Blackberry, the major customer of XScale. Now Intel is into NOK, a declining giant that is losing the smartphone business to Apple and RIM. It's just a matter of time for Intel to exit for the 2nd time.

Marvell failed to manage the XScale product line. They failed to tolerate the laziness and burocracy of the Intel people. It's just a matter of time for Marvell to pull the plug.

NVidia seems to be gaining, but can they put off competition from MediaTek, a cut-throat company from Taiwan.
