You can activate a new PP account first and then port the # in when you're ready.

If you are with Sprint or Verizon, you can even add PagePlus to the same phone. Every CDMA phone can have two lines, it's called NAM1 and NAM2. Usually NAM1 is used when you activated the phone, then you can activate PP on NAM2.

However, things can get complicated if you are not so familiar with CDMA phones. So I still recommend you get another phone to try PP.
