Dell used to be very good. Now ... If you buy a Dell, be prepared to hardware failure within 3 years. If you don't mind the hassle such as spending hours of your time on the phone with Dell's dumb tech support in India, yes, go ahead and get a Dell. My company provides every employee a Dell laptop. We have to stock large amount of spare parts to keep them running. I had the mobo replaced after 2 weeks of usage. Many of my co-workers had to replace mobo, HDD, battery, display within a year. I'm surprised that Dell can still sell laptops to large corporates. The IT guys told me that the key of Dell's "succes"s is rock bottom price -- cheap cheap cheap.
Lenovo probably makes the best laptop. But the price is much higher.
A good compromise is HP/Compaq. You can get a very decent HP lappy for $399 after rebate and stuff.
