If you computer has the problem from virus, trojan or malware, the system restore will not fix the issue.
But you cantry this: if you friends using the Dell computer, you can borrow thire system restore media, then you just simply reinstall the system, cos you have Dell version hardware---BIOS, you can use any Dell version system to reinstall. If your friends don't have Dell, you can call Dell again to order the system media. If you don't want to pay for that media, you can borrow the ratail version of you system and use your product key locate at case--desktop, bottom --laptop, and you need call Microsoft to active your system, just tell them your computer got hard ware problem and been replaced with new one, such like hard drive or motherboard, of cause you need reinstall your system, Microsoft will help you to active the product with no problem. It's sounds like your system kernel file been corrupted, if you have system cd you can easy to fix it by running sfc /scannow command in amd mode, but you don't have that media, most options will need the system media, so better way is order one disk, $42.00 is much cheaper then any version of windows xp, even the oem version right now cost you $135.00.
So, good luck.
Try this.
