I have been working in Java for about 10 yrs and people always ask me how to start. The best place to go is http://java.sun.com. But sometime it is a little confusing for an absolute beginner. So it is not a bad idea to buy a book. And this book was published in 2005. Believe me, the is the only book a beginner needs. And he/she is gonna to have a lot of fun of reading this one.
