problem in updating win2k

I tried to update my win2k, and the microsoft site shows 1 critical upadate about a vulnerability microsoft VM. But just at the beginning of the installation of the patch, it says "the microsoft VM you're trying to install is a protected system compoent, and can only be updated by a later release of operating system or service pack". Another pc also use the same win2k, but doesn't have the problem in this update. The only difference is this pc is a compaq and the os is updated from ME to 2k, but that pc is dell and the os is a clean install of 2k
