When router is not that popular like 5 years ago, computers are connect to hub or switch in using ADSL. However, the computer (client) need to run software to enable different client protocols some like Dynamic IP address, PPPoE, PPTP, static IP address or BigPond. It's all depend on the service privider how to connect and use what protocol in connecting your workstations.
