This is an error generated by Compaq software that supposedly monitors the hard drive for problems before an outright failure robs you of your data. If you're able to boot normally by following the instructions, then take the opportunity to save as many important documents as you can in another place, such as a Zip drive or CD. This may be your last chance.
Then again, it might not be a big problem after all. Once you're sure you have backed up everything critical, look into a fix for Compaq Deskpro computers with certain Seagate hard drives. It fixes a problem that causes a false error like the one you're seeing.
To find out about this issue and download the fix, go to www.compaq.com, which will redirect you to a Hewlett-Packard site about Compaq computers. Press the button for Support, and then enter ''1720 error'' as the search term.
