Any tool for graphic design?

I am going to have an interview for a web design position in a university. They want me to show my graphic design works during interview. Who can tell me what are the popular graphic design tools to design logo or simple pictures besides photoshop? Any websites to learn graphic design? I have to design something to show them!!
