Why my laptop so slow?

My laptop is IBM thinkpad t40.

System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 service Pack 2

Intel (R) Pentium (R) M
Processor 1500MHz

1.50Ghz, 512 MB of RAM

It is getting slower and slower, even when I open c: drive, it will take couple minutes to open it up.


Internet explorer even slower, takes several minutes to open a page. Pictures sometimes can not download.
What to look or clean to make it faster?
