why does my laptop crash?

pls. help. i bought a COMPAQ PRESARIO 1200 3 yrs ago. since then after i used for a few mon.s, it started crashing, i called compaq, the answer was: "it was designed for window98!!!!!!!" so i can not install new windows version. i installed some other programs, it crashed every 5 min.s, now i had to uninstall them. however, it still crashes every day, i changed my setting to prohibit the downloading cookies, and deleted all the old cookies, still crashing? any guru can help? pls. tks in advance and appreciate.
