If you're using Sun's Java, I remember since 1.4.2_01, they have an automatically update feature available to allow you to update your Java installation. Check if you see an icon for Java Control Panel in your computer's Control Panel (assume you're using Windows).

By the way, my personal experience was that if I make a major upgrade (say from 1.4.2 to 1.5), I would uninstall the old one first. But updating within the release, I use the update feature. If I were in your case (from English version to Chinese version), I would do uninstall first.
