ethernet does not work

My Sony PCG-GRX700P's integrated 100MB network adapter can not access internet after it is connected to the cable router. The device manager showes it is working properly with no conflict. When I click "repair this connection", the report is "test failed, can not renew IP address" although I set it to obtain IP automatically.It is the same after I uninstall and install the driver for it. When I firmly connect the ethernet port directly to a cable modem with a ethernet cable, the Windows XP Professional's window of internet connection showes that the network cable is unplugged very frequently. Any advice or help is appreciated.
