You can do it with a hub if you don't want ot use router.
Two cases
Case 1.
If you want to use Linux machine as gateway, here is a simple and easy to understand document for you.

Case 2.
If you use windows.
Have two NIC on your gateway pc. One NIC connect to cable modem, second NIC connect to the hub. When setting up network (If you are using win2k), select the NIC that connect to cable modem to enable Connection Sharing. For all other machines in your home, connect them to the hub. You gateway machine will automatically assign ip address for internal pc connected to the hub.
