不是笑話 but it doesn't make much sense.

Buy New York Times just to educate Americans about China? He will get 0 subscription in US because of that. No one likes to be brain-washed, even though it is wide spread. But openly omits that  is still not a smart thing to do. This guy clearly has too much money to burn and this move certainly has generated lots of attention for him to satisfy his ego.
