I think it stems from Chinese culture. There is no concept of cooperation, live and let live, or compassion, or empathy in Chinese culture. Everyone tries to show that he/she is better than others. If he/she indeed is slightly better off in however trivia manner , instead of be kind to the less fortunate, he/she would humiliate others by showing off in the worst possible way. As a results, it creates a no win situation and Chinese turn on each other more often than any other race.
I see that kind of behavior among men too.
