He is an extremely smart person but unfortulately lived in a home w/o normal parental love. Parents only push, demand, criticize, and blame. Too many Chinese families fell into the same trap. He may be an extreme case.
The #8 girl could be an important figure in his life if they work out. Hopefully they will not repeat the mistakes made by his parents.
