Way of life is not the same thing as "old life".

Life could change for better or for worse and people may not be able to control it. But way of life is more of a choice and preference than life.
People of HK are fighting for their way of life, which is to be able to think for themselves freely. And that is something more important than life itself. It is a concept mainlanders don't understand.
