Make sure you file a Notice of Transfer & Release

 (top portion of your title) as soon as you hand over the title and keys (in 5 days). It can be filed online through the DMV website or you can fill out the form, REG 138 in any DMV office. This covers you as far as anything happening to the vehicle from the day you sell the vehicle and after.
