GM Recalls 70,000 More Cars for Power-Steering Failures

General Motors is expanding a recall of 1.3 million cars with power-steering failures to include 69,633 more cars it should have added back in March 2014, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Only 2006–2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 models built between April and June 2006 are included in this recall. As with the initial recall—which included the Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy HHR, and Chevy Cobalt—the electric power steering (EPS) in these vehicles can fail at any time while driving. Previously, depending on the model, GM either replaced the EPS motor, the EPS motor controller, or the torque sensor. This time, it’s the torque sensor.

Dealers will replace the torque sensors with new, silver-plated sensors that have a “harder, thicker contact” at a later date. Owners can call Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, or visit NHTSA’s VIN lookup tool to check if a specific car falls under this recall.

This is GM’s third recall since the start of the year. Others include Goodyear tires that can crack on 2015 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Chevrolet Traverse models. And toe links can also separate on some 2015 Corvettes.
