I used to design machines with gearboxes. Gearbox manufacturers recommend to change oil after every 150 hrs of service. That was what I referenced in most of user manuals for machines I designed.
I change oil myself. From color and smell of the used oil, I can tell if oil is near end of its life. From my own experience, 150 hrs is a very good starting point for synthetic oils.
It does not matter whether it is 15,000 miles or 1,500 miles. After your engine runs roughly for 100 to 150 hours, you need to consider oil changes. Personally, I change oil (synthetic) every 7,500 miles.
Best regards,
Alex
