7. The function and consumption standard of engine oil The engine oil is one of the most important operating fluids in a combustion engine. The principal functions of the engine oil are: lubrication, cooling and prevention of corrosion and sediment. It is a technical necessity that every combustion engine consumes engine oil. For this reason, engines with a high-speed concept tend to have higher engine oil consumption than other BMW engines. The level of the engine oil consumptions is greatly influenced by driving style and by the fuel used. For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000 km. Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km. Oil consumption up to above specification according with technical standard, belongs to normal range. The oil indicator/warning light is a feature from BMW to remind the driver to check and refill the oil. It does not indicate any fault or defect. Please contact your nearest authorized BMW dealer in such a case.
