I agree with you that SUV has the advantage when Collison happens, although Sedan has good number during the test. Also, son will stay in cold area near us (Chicago), so obviously the high clearance should be very positive.
I am not sure about the function of AWD on the icy road. I have driven both of Sedan and SUV during icy and snow weather, my CRV stopped stably when I brake, but Sedan turned around that really scared me.
Son is not an aggressive driver, so SUV should be better choice for him.

Just FYI: the Sedan we have is Corolla, I never, ever, recommend it. We will trade in and buy another one after this.
