I believe it must be vapor too, but once it enters and since the compressor is up compressing, the vapor soon converts into liquid.

A trick for charging freon is usually to put the bottle in a bucket with warm water. This will help the liquid freon in the bottle turning into vapor faster. The bottle will soon become so freezing if not doing so.
