Four people were killed early Friday in a two-vehicle, head-on crash on I-75 northbound, just south of State Route 582, in Middleton Township, Wood County.
The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol received a call of a wrong-way driver about 2:15 a.m. While troopers were attempting to locate the 1999 Plymouth Breeze traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, the vehicle struck a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix head on.
As a result of the crash, the Breeze became completely engulfed in flames. The driver of the Breeze, Winifred D. Lein, 69, of Perry*****urg, Ohio was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Grand Prix, Christina M. Goyett, 21, of Bay City, Mich., and left rear passenger, Sarah J. Hammond, 21, of Yellow Springs, were pronounced dead at the scene. Rebekah M. Blakkolb, 20, of Aurora, who was seated in the rear middle seat was transported to University of Toledo Medical Center, where she later died as a result of her injuries.
The right rear passenger, Kayla A. Somoles, 19, of Parma, and front seat passenger, Angelica J. Mormile, 19, of Garfield Heights, both received incapacitating injuries and were transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo.
Lein, Goyett and Mormile were wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash, according to the patrol. Blakkolb and Somoles were not wearing safety belts and it is unknown if Hammond was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.
Middleton Township Fire Department and EMS, Bowling Green Fire Department and EMS, Mobile Life, Ohio Department of Transportation, Wood County Sheriff's Office and the Wood County Coroner assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
