Here is what I did for my Civic. I did not do alignment. I changed the 70,000 mile Michellin tires to thinner treads (50,000 mile? Goodyear), at most I throw them away if it happened again. My physics intuition told me, thinner/softer tire would not cup as easily as hard ones. Of course, I rotated tires a lot (free at SAM's club). The problem did not come back before I sold the car, should be >10,000- 20,000 miles on the tires.
Cupping is a positive feedback mechanism, so if you cannot eliminate the source, it will surely come back. tire rotation is very important to reduce the effect.
