Twin brothers, teenage girl die when car hits tree, splits in ha

Three young people were killed early this morning when their car slammed into a tree and split in two in South Arlington, police said.

Investigators found a liquor bottle at the scene and suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The accident happened about 3 a.m. when the driver lost control on westbound Southeast Green Oaks Boulevard and veered into a tree on the median at Yaupon Drive, across from Ferguson Junior High School.

The impact caused the Honda Accord to split in half and catch fire. An Arlington police officer spotted the fire and called for rescue personnel.

The driver and his brother were declared dead at the scene, and a teenage girl was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where she died. Two survivors, both male, were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The victims, ages 17 and 21, had not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.

The crash comes exactly a month after three Fort Worth teens were killed in a fiery crash on west Green Oaks.

 

Update:

The Tarrant County medical examiner has identified two of those killed in this morning's crash as Stephen and Michael Eckel.

The 21-year-old twin brothers both attended Seguin High School in Arlington .
