engine oil supposes getting darker as engine burns on hydrocarbon, and it does not necessarily mean not protective. all my cars have either cai or performance air filter and i change with synthetic oil every 10-15k miles and change filter religiously every 5k miles, no problem. i guess car will never live in a bubble and engine is rarely the first part to break_:'(
