O2 sensor--incoming mulfunctioning.

This sensor monitors the misture of air and gas to get the maximium gas millage. If it is dead or mulfunctioning, you are not getting the best mix. Now it is burning too rich--too much gas. You should replace that first.... That was most likely why your check engine light was on at the first place....
