It's fun to think you can buy a used, envy-inducing luxury European automobile for around the same price as a brand-new Korean compact. Hey, who wouldn't? You'd be smart to take a deep breath first.

Many car shoppers equate premium European nameplates with high quality, but evidence suggests some models are prone to expensive breakdowns - a conclusion Europeans themselves have come to realize.

Warranty Direct, Britain's leading third-party warranty company, examined the reliability of 250 models sold in the Isles. It looked at claims records for vehicles three to eight years old, chronicling necessary fixes after the factory warranties ran out.

Honda perennially earned top spot as the brand least likely to require repairs, with fellow Asian manufacturers Mazda, Toyota, Lexus, Suzuki, Subaru, Nissan and Mitsubishi all ranked near the top.

"If you want satisfaction, buy from Japan," was the blunt summation of BBC's Top Gear experts when they crunched the numbers in their own reliability survey of 56,000 British car owners.

European autos are best left to those who know what they're getting into. If your used-car budget doesn't allow a generous repair fund, think twice - or lease a new one. By way of example, here are eight second-hand Euro imports you may want to avoid.
