When the car is not started, the battery voltage should be about 12 volts. After you start the car, battry voltage should be more than 13.8V. Less than 13.8V means the alternator is not charging the battery.
However, make sure you check the alternator belt first. It could be loose. It is not common that the alternator goes bad so early.
