Toyota Reviews Electronics in U.S. Corolla, Matrix Cars

By Alan Ohnsman
March 17 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., struggling to
rebound from record U.S. recalls, is reviewing complaints linked
to electronic control units in Corolla and Matrix small cars
sold in the U.S. that may cause the engine to shut down.
The components in question are in 1.19 million model 2005
through 2007 vehicles, Toyota told the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration in a March 2 letter the company provided
to the media today. Toyota doesn’t believe there’s an immediate
safety issue related to the problem and hasn’t determined
whether a recall will occur, said Brian Lyons, a company
spokesman.
“In addition to considering how to address our customers’
concerns, Toyota will be discussing our engine stall or shutdown
philosophy and the entire issue with NHTSA,” Lyons said. “It
is inappropriate for Toyota to speculate on the outcome of this
discussion at the moment.”
Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, is scrambling to
regain its reputation for quality after recalling 8.5 million
vehicles worldwide for flaws linked to unintended acceleration
and brakes. The company in February said it was also reviewing
complaints about how the steering feels in 2009 and 2010 model
Corollas.
Toyota’s letter was part of a preliminary examination
requested by NHTSA. The company is aware of at least 26
complaints about engine shutdowns linked to the issue, Lyons
said.
The electronics issue was reported earlier by the Detroit
Free Press.
Toyota’s U.S. sales unit is based in Torrance, California.
