BMW's 5 Series has agile and secure handling, and the ride is quiet. The turbocharged 535i is quick and returns a commendable 22 mpg overall, but the shifter is a bit complicated to use at first. The seats are very comfortable in the front and rear. Interior fit and finish is impressive, but the iDrive driver-interaction system is tedious to use although it has been recently improved. A V8 engine and the high-performance, V10-powered M5 sedan are also available. AWD is available only with the six-cylinder. IIHS side-crash results are disappointing. Reliability of the 535i has been much below average, while the 528i and 550i have been average. A redesign is around the corner.
