I got a Compass 4x4 for the lower price. Not a typical Jeep for sure. Drives like a car with higher clearance. It's using the same platform as Dodge Caliber but with better suspensions and 4x4 lockable. The North Edition I got comes will sunroof, ESP, ABS, side airbags, lockable 4x4. Horsepower wise, it's similar to Forester.
Have been driving it for 2 winters in Canada. Very good on snow and ice, even without winter tires. The only con is the lack of power. The 2.4L engine is not ideal if you like power. Never, ever go for the 2.0L engine or FWD. But CRV, RAV4, Forester, Outlander all have the same problem. So far, I like my Compass and it never made any trouble.
Of course, Forester is a good cross-over too. Subaru is way better then Toyota and Honda.
The bottom line is: If you want a ride similar to CRV, RAV4, Forester, Outlander, Compass or Patriot is ok considering the lower price. If you want a real Jeep, go get a Liberty at least.
